Diamond Shape

Shape is one of the first decisions you’ll make and one of the most personal. It affects how large the diamond appears, what settings work best, and the overall style of the ring. Here’s a quick breakdown of the most popular shapes:

Round — The most popular shape by far. Maximizes sparkle due to its symmetrical facets. Tends to be priced higher than other shapes because more rough diamond is lost during cutting.

Oval — Elongates the finger and appears larger than a round of the same carat weight. A top choice for those who want a big look without a big price tag.

Cushion — Soft, rounded corners with a vintage feel. Comes in square or rectangular versions. Known for a romantic, antique look.

Emerald — A rectangular shape with step-cut facets that create a hall-of-mirrors effect rather than sparkle. Elegant and sophisticated but shows inclusions more easily, so clarity matters more here.

Pear — A teardrop shape that elongates the finger. Wear it with the point facing outward for the most flattering look.

Marquise — Elongated with pointed ends. Creates the illusion of a larger diamond and makes fingers appear longer and slimmer.

Princess — A square shape with brilliant-cut facets. Modern and sharp, second most popular after round.

Radiant — A rectangular or square shape with trimmed corners and brilliant-cut facets. Combines the elegance of the emerald with the sparkle of the round.

Asscher — Similar to emerald but square. Deep step-cut facets create a vintage, art deco feel.

Heart — A romantic, unmistakable shape. Best in larger carat weights where the shape is more defined.

Diamond Fluorescence

Fluorescence refers to how a diamond glows when exposed to ultraviolet light. About 25–35% of diamonds have some degree of fluorescence, most commonly blue. It’s graded as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong.

In most cases, fluorescence has no visible effect in normal lighting — and in some cases it can actually be a benefit. A faint blue fluorescence in a slightly yellow diamond can make it appear whiter in sunlight. However, in rare cases, Strong or Very Strong fluorescence can make a diamond look hazy or oily. When shopping, ask to see the diamond in different lighting conditions if fluorescence is a concern.

The good news: diamonds with fluorescence are often priced lower than those without, so it can be a smart way to get more diamond for your budget.

Natural vs Lab Grown Diamonds

Natural Diamonds — Formed deep in the earth over billions of years and brought to the surface through volcanic activity. Each one is unique. Natural diamonds are graded and certified by labs like GIA or AGS, which verify their quality and origin.

Lab Grown Diamonds — Created in a laboratory using advanced technology that replicates the natural growing process. They are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. Lab grown diamonds typically cost 50–70% less than natural diamonds of comparable quality, making them an excellent choice for those who want maximum size and quality within a budget.
