Step One: Set Your Budget

Start here before you look at a single ring. Having a clear budget keeps the process focused and stress free. There’s no rule about how much you should spend — ignore the outdated “two months salary” advice. Step Two: Learn The Basics

Before you start shopping, a little knowledge goes a long way. Familiarize yourself with the 4 C’s — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat — so you understand what affects a diamond’s quality and price. The most important thing to remember: always prioritize cut above everything else. A well cut diamond will outshine a larger, poorly cut stone every time.

Step Three: Choose Your Diamond

This is where your budget and knowledge come together. A few key decisions to make:

Natural or lab-grown? Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to natural diamonds and cost 50–70% less. If size and budget are priorities, lab-grown is worth serious consideration.

What shape? Round diamonds are the most popular and the most brilliant. Ovals, cushions, and pears face up larger for their carat weight and offer a distinctive look. Choose based on your partner’s style.

What size? Focus on finding an eye clean diamond rather than chasing a specific carat number. A 0.90ct well cut diamond will look nearly identical to a 1.00ct and cost significantly less.

Always make sure your diamond comes with a GIA or AGS certificate.

Platinum — The most durable and prestigious option. Naturally white, hypoallergenic, and will never fade or change color. The highest price point but worth it for longevity.

White Gold — A more affordable alternative to platinum with a similar look. Requires replating every few years to maintain its white finish, but is an excellent choice for most budgets.

Yellow Gold — Classic and warm. Having a major resurgence in popularity. Pairs beautifully with warmer skin tones and vintage style settings. A lower color grade diamond looks stunning in yellow gold.

Ring size is one of the easiest things to overlook and one of the most important to get right. A few ways to find your partner’s size without spoiling the surprise:

  • Borrow a ring they already wear on their ring finger and bring it in — we can measure it
  • Ask a close friend or family member who might know

  • Don’t stress too much — most rings can be resized after the proposal

Step Eight: Plan Your Timeline

Don’t leave this to the last minute, especially if you’re considering a custom piece.

Ready made rings — Can typically be ready within a few days to a week.

Custom designed rings — Allow 3 to 6 weeks from first consultation to finished ring, depending on complexity.
